The Northern Hemisphere summers of 2022 and 2023 demonstrate that extreme heat events are an urgent and real problem that cities must address. Among the many aspects of urban planning related to human thermal comfort, maintaining and increasing urban coverage is an important means. Creating shade, absorbing and cooling water vapor within leaves, are the two primary mechanisms by which urban tree canopies and urban forest canopies reduce urban temperatures. In planning, focus should be placed on canopy quality, canopy coverage, and how to select and manage different tree species in a better way.
