Urban form can be defined as the spatial pattern and representation of human activities that occur over time and across space. Urban form has a significant impact on the social, ecological and economic functions of cities and can play a key role in enhancing urban resilience and sustainability. Urban form elements exist at three scales: macro, meso, and micro. The macro scale focuses on the overall structure of the city and some major elements and aspects such as city size, development type (i.e., compact, dispersed, etc.), distribution pattern of people and jobs, degree of clustering, and landscape connectivity. The meso-scale is related to the structure and layout of neighborhoods, blocks, lots, open spaces and streets. The micro-scale mainly deals with the granular design and structure of buildings, and their position with respect to neighboring buildings, open spaces, and pathways.
