Regional production complex (RPC) is a theory of organizing production within certain territories. Originated in the Soviet Union, it spread later to other socialist countries such as China. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was introduced to the United States, the United Kingdom and other western countries. RPC is composed of specialized departments representing regional economic characteristics, auxiliary departments cooperating and supporting departments, and self-supporting departments serving the region, forming a spatial organization form of socialized mass production. The fundamental driving force of the development of RPC is that it may bring greater economic agglomeration effects than the single distribution of enterprises. It is not just an agglomeration of enterprises, but an orderly combination of enterprises that are complementary in production and their economies are closely related, so to achieve marked economic outcomes.
