Traffic calming refers to a series of measures aiming to reduce the negative impacts of motor vehicle use and improve the environment for walking and non-motor vehicle use. Traffic calming mainly includes raised intersection, intersection bottleneck, lane narrow, woven pavement, deceleration platform, and so on. The concept of traffic calming originated in Netherlands in the 1960s. It advocates returning street space to pedestrians, implementing road diversion planning to slow motor speed and physical guide traffics, so to improve the calming environment for community living and traveling. Since the 1970s, the concept has spread rapidly in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Britain, France, Japan, Israel, Austria, Switzerland and other European countries, a trend of traffic calming.
