According to WHO, a Healthy City is “a city that is continuously striving to improve the health and determinants of health of its residents, not one that has achieved a particular health status.” In 1989, China launched a national Hygienic Cities project to improve cities’ physical infrastructure and environment, which may be regarded as a groundwork for the Healthy City initiative. Since 2007, there have been 10 pilot Healthy City projects in China, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, etc., mostly in the developed regions in the eastern coastal area.
