A niche refers to the temporal and spatial position of a population in a natural ecosystem and its functional relationship with related populations. Ecological niche includes fundamental ecological niche and actual ecological niche. Fundamental ecological niche refers to the theoretical maximum space that can be inhabited by a species in a biological community. The actual niche refers to the space that a species actually occupies. Niche theory includes niche width, niche overlap, niche separation and niche movement. With the popularity of interdisciplinary trends, niche theory is often applied to ecological environment assessment in the field of urban planning.
