Gentrification

2023-03-07

The term "gentrification" was first put forward by Glass (a Marxist planner and sociologist) in 1964. It is used to describe the complex process of community class transformation in the once decayed central region of London after urban renewal, housing and living service prices rise as high-income people move in, and original residents are forced to move out due to unaffordable living costs. Often seen as an inevitable result of urban regeneration, gentrification has now become a global phenomenon. But unlike the neutral image of "regeneration" in the eyes of the public, "gentrification" often carries negative connotations. Gentrification gradually extends from spatial regeneration, and becomes a controversial topic involving society, politics and economy in the field of urban planning.
