The State of China’s Cities Report 2018/2019 is co-edited by the China Science Center of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, the China Association of Mayors, and the Urban Planning Society of China, with the aim of improving readers’ understanding of China’s cities, enhancing consensus, and contributing Chinese experience to making global cities more livable and sustainable. The theme of the book is “Global Action & China Practice: Together for a Better Future,” which echoes with the theme of “Cities of Opportunities: Connecting Culture and Innovation” of the 10th Session of the World Urban Forum held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in 2020, and reflects the common concern for humanistic care and innovation development. It advocates that the international community could join hands in addressing the challenges of global urbanization and scientifically plan the blueprint for urban and rural development, and that people from all countries could exchange and learn from each other to explore a sustainable path of urban development in line with local characteristics.

It is hoped that the publication and distribution of this book will help the international community understand China’s urbanization process in an objective and comprehensive manner. Urban work should aim at creating excellent human settlements, and strive to build cities into beautiful homes where people and nature live in harmony, as well as continue to make due contribution to the sustainable development of cities around the world.
